The Midnight Chronicles TearJerker List
Tear Jerker List
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TearJerker 1: The deaths of the Howlands. Their youngest daughter only wanted to help what she thought was a desperate and scared child and it got her and her entire family killed by a monster. It hits harder later when Mr.Howland's students are sitting in the middle of class waiting for him to show up and are confused and a little concerned when he doesn't.
2: Look up the above nightmare fuel in the flashback arc and realize that Derrick and Tina were 14 when they had to experience all of that. Small wonder it is still affecting Derrick so heavily even 10 years later. They are genuinely crying from fear in the flashback.
3: In an odd way, the villains reactions to the deaths of their family members. See Even Evil Has Loved Ones below.
4: The climactic moment during Derrick's fight with the big pig mask guy when in a moment of fear and desperation, Derrick grabs the dropped axe on the ground, swings it around and buries it in the man's side. In a terrifying contrast to the trained adults, who had accepted that they'd have to kill these men and women to stay alive, Derrick his utterly horrified by what he did and he can only stammer in shock and horror until Tina cries out for his help. There's a reason the chapter is titled Innocence Lost. Leo's reaction is heartbreaking but he still manages to comfort his son.
5: Josephina having to perform a surgery on her sister, Gloria. They succeed but it's still a tense situation and after everything they've been through, she finally breaks down crying on Michelle's shoulder.
6: He's undoubtedly a mass murdering bastard, but you can't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for Thaddeus when he hears that another one of his sons is dead and that everything is crumbling down around them. After the deaths of two of his sons he starts having a panic attack, nearly throws up and doubles over. He would've been done right then and there if not for his sons comforting him, giving Thaddeus a chance to regain his fighting spirit.
7: The throwdown between the two families, The Brannons VS The Blackburns, is as awesome as it is tragic. Despite the Brannons being mass murderers, they are still a family who clearly love each other and they gradually get taken apart by the Blackburns. Whenever one of them dies it clearly deeply affects the others. To the point that they even briefly lose their fighting spirits and nearly start crying as they desperately cry out for their brothers and sons. On The Blackburns Side, they're fighting to survive and while they're all clearly a group of badasses, they still have to see one another get beaten bloody over the course of the battle.
8: Building on this, Michelle's defeat. She puts up a great fight against Thaddeus but she ultimately just gets beaten down and thrown out a window where her broken body lands in front of her daughter Tina. Just imagine being a 14yo girl, going through this entire nightmare, being forced to hide while the grownups fought a small army of cannibals and metahumans, and then just when you're escaping, you see the broken beaten body of your beloved mother being thrown out of a window and landing in the mud. Not to mention what Alessandro must have been feeling when he found out what happened to her.
9: The cousins then have to split their forces after distracting the villain. Derrick leads him away so that Tina and the escaping civilians can save Michelle. Tina does so while Derrick goes one-on-one with Thaddeus Brannon. During this battle, Derrick gets his arm flat out crushed by Thaddeus's grip strength, making the poor boy SCREAM in agony! And how does he get out of this? He sets Thaddeus on freaking fire! Like, a LOT of fire, causing a massive fire that disables Thaddeus and after that he is forced to run through said fire to escape him.
Derrick Blackburn, a 14yo boy, is beaten, abused, gets a limb broken, is forced to kill someone in self-defense, damn near kills a second man, and has to run through fire and gets some nasty burns from it.
Sure he survives it, but hot damn that is a lot for a kid.
Sure, he and Tina joke a bit, but it's clear the cousins have been irrevocably mentally scarred by the farm disaster.
10: Diablos Brannon's Death. He is the last of the Brannons and he awakens from getting his head smashed in to find the Guest House burning down, all of their henchmen dead, his father nowhere in sight and his brothers all dead. He is reduced to crying and sobbing and screaming for help while trying to wake up Chunk to no avail. Ultimately grabs a random gun, limps out of the burning house, limps across the farm while regenerating from the flames as the rain puts them out and he squares off with the Blackburns one last time. Rather than even try to fight however he just mumbles and points the empty gun and clicks it before being obliterated in the responding hailstorm of gunfire. He essentially commits suicide by cop.
11: Thaddeus Brannon's Death. After losing his sons, his farm, his army, getting his ass completely kicked, and going through an enormous amount of damage, he is 'saved' by Ramona just so she can tell him how badly he screwed up and that she never cared about their success anyway. All of their deaths and sacrifices, all of the fight, all their planning and effort...it was all a game to her from the very start and that now she's going to tie up the loose ends. Even worse, Thaddeus has likely realized that his daughters will be without any form of protection from this monster. Thaddeus knows for a fact he doesn't stand a chance but he tries to fight her anyway and he is completely ripped apart before being frozen, shattered and melted. In that order. We later learn that Ambrosia, the woman who had been tasked with protecting the daughters of the family, was tracked down and brutally killed by Ramona and that the girls disappeared.
12: It is made clear that, while the family physically recovered from the whole nightmare, got some upgrades and even become celebrities for everything that survived and blowing the lid off of a massive criminal conspiracy, the mental scars of the whole disaster are going to linger for life. It's also hinted later that several associates of the Brannons made attempts on their lives afterword. They might have survived by the nightmare did not end at the farm.
